Wine FAQs
Are your wines suitable for vegetarians and vegans?
All of our wines are suitable for vegetarians. Our white wines are suitable for vegans, but our red wines are fined with organic egg whites.
Can I visit Bonterra?
Right now we do not have a space open for the public, but be sure to sign up for our newsletter using the form in the footer to receive updates on any developments!
Can I purchase wine directly from the winery?
Do wines made from organic grapes age the same way conventional wines do?
We regularly taste our red wines from previous vintages (including our very first vintage in 1992) and they are ageing beautifully. Our Biodynamic® wines are perfect for aging.
Is there Sulphur in your wine?
Some people are affected by the level of Sulphur used in conventionally produced wines. We are required by organic standards to use lower levels of Sulphur (a maximum of 1/3 of the amount conventional wines are allowed).
What’s the difference between “organic wine” and “made with organic grapes?”
There is only one difference between these two categories. Organic wine does not permit the use of additional Sulphur. Our winemakers made the decision to use the regulated amount of Sulphur in our wines to ensure that the wine you open is the same quality as it was when we bottled it.
Are there special instructions for shipping wine in warmer weather?
Extreme weather conditions across the US can create challenges for shipping wine. When the current temperatures reach levels that could negatively affect your wine order, we suggest a few options for you to consider.
1. Add an Eco-Cool Pack to your order to protect your wine from extremely hot weather during shipping
2. Choose Next Day shipping during checkout
3. Email us at info@bonterra.com and request that we hold your shipment until weather conditions improve
We want your wines to arrive safely, and just as delicious as when they left our winery. Thank you for choosing Bonterra, Cheers!
Are there sulfites in Bonterra wine?
The grapes we grow that go into wines we label as ‘made with organic grapes’ are held to the same standards as grapes used to make organic wines. The main difference is that US regulation does not allow wines with any added sulfites to be labelled as ‘organic wine.’ Our winemakers have made the decision to use a limited amount of sulfites in our wines to ensure that the wine you open is the same quality as it was when we bottled it, so we label our wines as ‘made with organic grapes.’
The USDA “Made with organic grapes” certification allows a maximum of 100ppm of sulfites in wines made with organic grapes – that’s less than 1/3 of the amount of sulfites conventional wines are allowed. The average total sulfites for Bonterra wines are between 70 to 90ppm.
We recommend that you contact your physician regarding specific health concerns.
Is your wine gluten-free?
Wine grapes are gluten free, however, other ingredients and processes used during the winemaking process have the potential to contribute trace amounts of gluten to wine. These items may include yeast, fining agents, filters, barrel sealing materials and some packaging.
Cooperages (barrel manufacturers) sometimes use a flour paste to seal the heads (ends) of the barrels used to age wine. While unlikely, it is possible that a minute amount of gluten may find its way into the wine from this source. There is also the slight possibility that gluten could be present in the packaging materials in which wines are shipped.
We feel confident that our wines are safe for those with gluten intolerances, however our official recommendation is that individuals must decide for themselves if a product is right for them based on their own personal circumstances and advice from their doctor.
Does Bonterra wine contain Glyphosate?
We actively avoid glyphosate. It is not used in our estate vineyards, nor in partner vineyards we source from.
